Calvary's Beginnings
On September 15, 1948, LeRoy and Faye Dority began holding meetings in their home at 501 West Washington in Mt. Pleasant, IA. An organizational meeting was held January 19, 1949, with Mr. Dority as pastor. They were organized as the Grace Bible Church. Meetings were in homes until 1950, when they used a schoolhouse between Danville and New London, as their meeting site.
In 1952, a church building was erected on the lot that was purchased at 411 East Green in Mt. Pleasant.
The church name was changed to Calvary Bible Church in March, 1956.
During the ministry of Granville LaForge (1956-1959), a Bible-believing Baptist Church was organized, changing the name to Calvary Baptist Church, which was made official several years later.
On April 29, 1965, new corporation papers were filed with the State of Iowa. A church covenant and doctrinal statement were adopted on July 8, 1965, and the old organization transferred all property to the newly organized Calvary Baptist Church.
On November 22, 1965, the church called a council of other Baptist churches in the state, and a service was held, recognizing the group as a duly constituted Baptist church.
On January 20, 1966, the church voted to seek fellowship with both the Iowa association and the General Association of Regular Baptist Churches.
The Move to Mapleleaf Drive
During the early 1970s, a Building Promotion Fund was established. It was decided to sell the parsonage on Laurel Drive and purchase the property of 7.1 acres, with house, located on Mapleleaf Drive, which was accomplished the last week of December 1973.
Construction began in January 1975 on a brick building which would accomodate around 200 people. Dedication of the ground was conducted by Missionary Bill Brown on May 25, 1975. The church moved its worship services into the completed basement, early in 1976.
Work continued on the church building, with most of the work done by volunteer labor. The remaining portion of the buliding was completed (which included a baptistry, the first for Calvary Baptist Church). Dedication Service was held on June 17, 1979.
A New Sanctuary
June 4, 1995, ground breaking took place for the new sanctuary and office addition. By the end of the year, the majority of the construction was completed.
On February 11, 1996, in the evening, the first service was held in the new auditorium.
On March 3, the first morning service was held in the new auditorium.
May 5, 1996, was the Building Dedication Service.
