  • Sermons
Date: 11/15/2009

Preached by Pastor Mike Hess Sunday morning 11/15/2009.

Wisdom and Faith in Suffering

James 1:5-8

Introduction:

The four main questions of life:

1. How did I get here?            (Gen. 1:1)

2. Why am I here?                    (Gen. 1:26 & 1 Cor. 10:31)

3. Why is there pain, suffering and death in this  world? (Gen. 3)

4. What happens when I die?             (Heb. 9:27 & 2 Cor. 5:8)

“Get wisdom; get insight; do not forget, and do  not turn away from the words of my mouth. Do not forsake her, and she will keep you;  love her, and she will guard you. The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom, and whatever you get, get insight.  Prize her highly, and she will exalt you; she will  honor you if you embrace her.  She will place on your head a graceful garland; she will bestow on you a beautiful crown.”  Proverbs 4:5-9

I. Asking for Wisdom (1:5a)Wisdom:

the Hebrew word for wisdom means “living God’s way”

One commentator – “Living life scripturally in full recognition of who God is in order to please Him.”

A.T. Roberson – “the practical use of knowledge.”

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom”  Proverbs 1:7

“The fear of the Lord is a state of mind in which one’s own attitudes, will, feelings, deeds, and goals are exchanged for God’s.”  John MacArthur

“And because of him you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God” 1Cor. 1:30

“in whom are hidden all the treasures of  wisdom and knowledge.” Colossians 2:3

II. The Generosity of God (1:5b)

How does God Give to us? " Generously"

“He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things?”  Romans 8:32

III. The Condition of the Request:   Faith (1:6-8)

Faith is a trust in God’s character, His Word, His purposes and His promises.

“But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek  Him.”  Hebrews 11:6 (NKJV)

Closing Thoughts:

1. If we can trust God with the salvation of our  soul, our eternal salvation and for forgiveness of our sins then naturally we should trust Him to give us wisdom to endure trials.

2. Do NOT be divided on how you handle life.  For many they compartmentalize their  Christianity. The many so called believers fail to realize that they are to represent Christ everywhere.

3. The issue with trust is an issue with love.  God commands us to love Him alone, and to love Him with everything that we have and are. (Deut. 6:4-5)

“Trust in the LORD, with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.”  Proverbs 3:5-6
