Pastor Mike Hess: Jonah’s Repentance, Jonah 2:1-10, Pm
  • Sermons
Date: 01/10/2010

Preached by Pastor Mike Hess Sunday evening 01/10/2010.

Jonah’s Repentance

Jonah 2:1-10

Introduction:

“Repentance is a heartfelt sorrow for sin, a renouncing of it, and a sincere commitment to  forsake it and walk in obedience to Christ.” Wayne Grudem

“As it is, I rejoice, not because you were grieved, but because you were grieved into repenting.  For you felt a godly grief, so that you suffered no loss through us. For godly grief produces a  repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death.”  2 Corinthians 7:9-10

“testifying both to Jews and to Greeks of repentance toward God and of faith in our Lord  Jesus Christ.” Acts 20:21

I. He Prayed (Jonah 2:1-2)

“do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with  thanksgiving let your requests be made known  to God.” Philippians 4:6

“He sends out his command to the earth; his word runs swiftly. He gives snow like wool; he  scatters hoarfrost like ashes. He hurls down his  crystals of ice like crumbs; who can stand  before his cold? He sends out his word, and  melts them; he makes his wind  blow and the  waters flow.”  Psalm 147:15-18

“Whatever the LORD pleases, he does, in heaven and on earth, in the seas and all deeps. He it is  who makes the clouds rise at the end of the earth, who makes lightnings for the rain and  brings forth the wind from his storehouses.” Psalm 135:6-7

“For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and  chastises every son whom he receives.”
Hebrews 12:6

3 Ways we can respond to discipline:

1. We could become discouraged by it and think we deserve better

2. We can fight it and be stubborn

3. We can submit to it and be humbled

III. He Looked to the Lord (2:4-7)

“But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8

“But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ – by grace you have been saved.”
Ephesians 2:4-5

IV. He Yielded to the Lord (2:8-9)

V. He was Restored (Jonah 2:10)

“An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah." So he left them and departed.” Matthew 16:4

“An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. For just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.”  Matthew 12:39-40

Closing Thoughts:

1. Repentance should not be thought of as a one time event, rather it should be thought of as a  process that continually happens during our pilgrimage here on earth.

2. Our true loyalty and allegiance will be most  obvious during our times of distress.

“and call upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify me.” Psalm 50:15
