Preached by Pastor Mike Hess Sunday evening 03/28/2010.
The Power of the Message
Jonah 3:1-10
Introduction:
“Pay attention to yourselves! If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him, and if he sins against you seven times in the day, and turns to you seven times, saying, ‘I repent, you must forgive him.” Luke 17:3-4
Forgiveness has 3 implications:
1. You do not bring this up to the person anymore.
2. You do not bring this up to other people.
3. You do not dwell on the offense.
I. The New Journey but the Same Assignment (Jonah 3:1-4)
“The LORD, the LORD, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness.” Exodus 34:6
“The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.” Psalm 103:8
“He does not deal with us according to our sins, nor repay us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us.” Psalm 103:10-12
II. God Using Jonah (Jonah 3:5-10)
“testifying both to Jews and to Greeks of repentance toward God and of faith in our Lord Jesus Christ.” Acts 20:21
Application:
1. Every time you set out to do something for the Lord always keep this thought in mind – 2 Corinthians 3:5 – “Not that we are sufficient in ourselves to claim anything as coming from us, but our sufficiency is from God.”
2. Not only does God forgive us (GREAT NEWS!), but He also uses us (SOME MORE GREAT NEWS!).
3. There is a place in Christ’s service for everyone, there is a place in Christ’s church for everyone who is forgiven and repentant.
