Patience in Suffering
James 5:7-11
Introduction:
“Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice insofar as you share Christ’s sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed.” 1 Peter 4:12-13
“Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.” 2 Timothy 3:12
“If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.” John 15:18-19
I. Patience in Expectation (James 5:7-8)
Scripture references to the Rapture :
1 Thessalonians 4:13-18
John 14:1-3
1 Corinthians 15:51-55
“What then is Apollos? What is Paul? Servants through whom you believed, as the Lord assigned to each. I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything but only God who gives the growth.” 1 Corinthians 3:5-7
II. Patience in Judgment (James 5:9)
“Do all things without grumbling.” Philippians 2:14
“Therefore do not pronounce judgment before the time, before the Lord comes, who will bring to light the things now hidden in darkness and will disclose the purposes of the heart. Then each one will receive his commendation from God.” 1 Corinthians 4:5
III. Patience in Suffering (James 5:10-11)
“What he desires, that he does. For he will complete what he appoints for me.” Job 23:13b-14
“I know that you can do all things, and that no purpose of yours can be thwarted.” Job 42:2
“The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.” Psalm 103:8
Application:
1. Jesus Christ is coming again for His church. Allow this to be a great source of encouragement and comfort during your suffering (1 Thess. 4:18)
2. Become familiar with New Testament passages that speak of the examples of suffering in the Old Testament (specially 1 Cor. 10 & Heb.11)
3. Remember God’s grace in Christ and that God is graciously changing you into the image of His Son (1 Peter 2:21)
