Andy Bittle: Be Convinced of God’s Sovereignty
  • Sermons
Date: 05/23/2010

Preached by  Andy Bittle Sunday morning 05/23/2010.

Be Convinced of God’s Sovereignty

Watch for the changes that happen in Job’s thinking.

And the LORD said to Satan, "Have you considered my servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, who fears God and turns away from evil?" Job 1:8

Then Job answered and said:” Today also my complaint is bitter; my hand is heavy on account of my groaning. Oh, that I knew where I might find him, that I might come even to his seat! I would lay my case before him and fill my mouth with arguments. I would know what he would answer me and understand what he would say to me. Would he contend with me in the greatness of his power? No; he would pay attention to me. Job 23:1-6

Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind and said: "Dress for action like a man; I will question you, and you make it known to me. Will you even put me in the wrong? Will you condemn me that you may be in the right? Have you an arm like God, and can you thunder with a voice like his? "Adorn yourself with majesty and dignity; clothe yourself with glory and splendor. Pour out the overflowings of your anger, and look on everyone who is proud and abase him. Look on everyone who is proud and bring him low and tread down the wicked where they stand. Hide them all in the dust together; bind their faces in the world below. Then will I also acknowledge to you that your own right hand can save you. Job 40:6-14

"Can you draw out Leviathan with a fishhook or press down his tongue with a cord? Can you put a rope in his nose or pierce his jaw with a hook? Job 41:1, 2

Then Job answered the LORD and said: "I know that you can do all things, and that no purpose of yours can be thwarted. ‘Who is this that hides counsel without knowledge? ‘Therefore I have uttered what I did not understand, things too wonderful for me, which I did not know. 'Hear, and I will speak; I will question you, and you make it known to me.'I had heard of you by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye sees you; therefore I despise myself, and repent in dust and ashes." Job 42:1-6

Why does Job Answer?
He fears God
Then he is prideful
Then God expresses Himself
Then Job answers

“Job is crushed under the weight of God’s Greatness” John MacArthur

Job realizes God’s Sovereignty.                      Are you convinced of who God is?

as I was in my prime, when the friendship of God was upon my tent, when the Almighty was yet with me, when my children were all around me, when my steps were washed with butter, and the rock poured out for me streams of oil! When I went out to the gate of the city, when I prepared my seat in the square, the young men saw me and withdrew, and the aged rose and stood; the princes refrained from talking and laid their hand on their mouth; Job 29:4-9

ME            ME          ME

And Jesus answered them, "Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance." Luke 5:31, 32

Application:

1. God is sovereign in all things.

2. God works in our suffering to draw our attention from concentrating on our suffering; to focus on Him.

3. You can not have a biblical view of God and experience God working in your suffering to     change you and grow you without knowing Him personally.
