Pastor Mike Hess:Modeling Forgiveness, Philemon 1:8-16
  • Sermons
Date: 06/20/2010

Preached by  Pastor Mike Hess Sunday morning 06/20/2010.

Modeling Forgiveness

Philemon 1:8-16

Isaiah 43:25
“I, I am he who blots out your transgressions for my own sake, and I will not remember your sins.”

3 Implications of Forgiveness:
  1. We do not bring it up to this person again.
  2. We do not bring it up to others again.
  3. We do not dwell on it.

I. Paul’s Appeal to Philemon (Philemon 1:8-9)

Colossians 3:12-13
“Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.”

II. Paul’s Appeal for Onesimus (Philemon 1:10-14)

2 Corinthians 7:10
“For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death.”

Acts 26:20
“but declared first to those in Damascus, then in Jerusalem throughout all the region of Judea, and also to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, performing deeds in keeping with their repentance.”

2 Timothy 2:24-25
“And the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but kind to everyone, able to teach, patiently enduring evil, correcting his opponents with gentleness. God may perhaps grant them repentance leading to a knowledge of the truth.”

III. Gospel Transformation (Philemon 1:15-16)

Genesis 50:20
“As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today.”

Application:

1. Keep the cross and the gospel center when dealing with forgiveness.

2. Remember God’s patience and grace at work in your life.

3. Deal with offenses and conflict biblically and do not take matters into your own hands- God knows what He’s doing and talking about!
